Giraffes
Giraffe is the tallest living animal with a long neck and legs, face like camel and color patches on the fur that resemble slightly to leopard's spots. Standing tall at 5 to 6 meters, male giraffe weighs around 1.6 tons and females weigh around 800 kg. Most of the species of giraffes are found in the African continent and they inhabit savannas, grasslands and open land. They are commonly found in Chad in South Africa, Niger in the west and Somalia in the east. The primary source of food for giraffes is the acacia leaves. Lions are the main predators of adult giraffes and the calves are often preyed upon by leopard, spotted hyenas and wild dogs. Due to its distinctive appearance, giraffes have often appeared in the popular cultures including in books, cartoons and paintings.  Though some of the subspecies are considered as endangered but overall giraffes are found in abundance in several game reserves and the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) classifies them under the category of Least Concern. When it comes to the appearance of giraffe, though its long neck and tall legs, the overall body is relatively short. They have large bulging eyes with an all round vision due to its height. Giraffe has a sharp hearing and smell senses. The purplish black color protects it from sun burns. The coat has dark blotches and patches of orange, brown, chestnut or black color and each individual has a unique pattern of patches. The coat along with its patches help them in camouflaging in the savanna grasslands and thereby protect from the predators.
